Does Walking Burn more then jogging

If you don't like jogging, the good news is that brisk walking could burn the same amount of calories.

A group from the University of Washington School of Medicine compared the amount of calories burned by walking and jogging on the treadmill at various corresponding speeds in a group of young active women. The study consisted of walking and running on the treadmill for five minutes at a speed range ranging from four to 10.4 km per hour.

Walking :

Results showed that calorie expenditure was significantly higher when walking compared to jogging when treadmill speeds reached 8.8 km per hour or more. Of course, these findings only apply to the speeds used in the study. However, they show that jogging is not necessary, especially if you prefer to walk.

However, the fact is that walking alone burns a modest amount of calories. Each pound of fat contains approximately 3,500 calories. If we assume that 30 minutes of brisk walking burns around 350 calories, it will take at least 10 workouts to get rid of just a pound of fat.

Previous research that showed a beneficial effect of walking alone on weight loss, as opposed to a combination of walking and diet, included 60 minutes of brisk walking every day for three months.

Most studies examining the effects of aerobic exercise alone (rather than exercise and diet) on weight loss have used programs that last 30-45 minutes, 4-5 days per week. Weight loss with such routines generally averages about a quarter of a pound per week.

If you plan to use walking (or any form of moderate intensity aerobic exercise) as a way to lose weight, make sure you are aware that you will have to do A LOT to see real results.
